MX Clears are a Risk to Keycaps | Why I never recommend Cherry MX Clears
Cherry MX Clear stems are asymmetrical with the Y axis having an irregular thickness towards the middle. If Keycaps are produced asymmetrical they will fit tightly on the MX Clear stem due to it having a section which is larger than standard.
Ergo Clears emerged during a time where the hobby was still new, and switch options were limited, however lost traction as time progressed and Eastern switch manufacturers started providing the community with a greater range of options.
I'm glad Cherry didn't listen to the community and mass produce an MX Clear with a lighter spring. If they're going to fix the MX clear stem design and mold, at that point they might aswell make a better feeling, mode...

    I’m SO GLAD I found this video. I was about to order and try TWO sets of Ergo Clears on two keyboards, and this video saved me both the money and the annoyance! The note about the Clears having a thicker design so that the keycaps can't be easily pulled off in an industrial environment makes perfect sense and follows Cherry's design ethos. Great job. Thank you!

    Great video! For a long time I wanted to use a mechanical keyboard... cool factor, but ever since the using the original logitech cherries.. i was very disapointed of the wobble just putting my fingers on they keys. Then looking for reviews...a lot of reviewer conveiniently leave this out. I checked out the logitech G915 at a store a few years ago, and I like that type of "not wobble" but 💸💸💸. ff almost a decade.. I've given up on the search now. IMO, The design of most of these have a fundimental flaw.. imo.. being square. they coull easily be metal rount housing. this make holes easier to have manufacturing/molding tolerances. square is hard to manufacture. the cheap housing screems of lazy engineering or that plastic is just too expensive.

    I'm shocked that it seems nobody has tried completely different designs for stabilizers. Ultimately what it's trying to do is pretty simple. And using a plastic housing to hold a metal wire seems like a pretty cheap way of tackling the problem while introducing an obvious failure point as you demonstrated (deforming the plastic clips with the metal).

    The Durock v2s say they come with this "soulmate" pack? Is it better to use that than doing the holee mod? I see it has some dampening for on the PCB, two pads for each stabilizer housing and a wire pad for the middle of the stabilizer wire. It comes with some smaller pads that go inside of the stabilizer as well.

    I know this video is old, but I'm going to comment anyway. Nothing in my life has confused me more than mechanical keyboards, and lube is just a piece of the massive confusion. I just want to know what I need to buy. If you were me what are you buying to cover all bases for future switches you might purchase, along with the stabilizers and anything else you have to lube. I'm guessing I'm just going to buy Krytox 205g0, Tribosys 3203, and some dielectric grease

  • @Zeioth
    @Zeioth 2 года назад

    It's true dielectric grade doesn't adhere so well to the plastic, but one technique I applyied successfuly to my ZealiosV2 was to mix 205g2 with a bit of dielectric grease. That way you can apply a thinner and more evenly spreaded layer than you normaly could. for springs you can also use the bag method to lube an entire bag of springs by using just a bit of krytox and then dielectric grease to make it spread evenly. ZealiosV2 is nylon, so take that into account too. Materials matter. g0 could make sense in tangerines for example, because the friction coefitient of that material is only 0.1 (vs 0.3 of nylon or 0.25 of POM) so there's really no imperfection to mask there, you just want it to go like boop.

    That explains a lot of things: I pu MT3 caps on Ergo Clears and was surprised when I changed a cap and ripped half the switch off! Mercifully it still worked, but still... I thought either I messed up or Drop made a bad batch, but this explains it!

    • @studio.hiro_rin
      @studio.hiro_rin 2 года назад

      I also reviewed the new hyperglide mx clear and it didn't go well with the new keycap. So, when I pulled out the keycap many times, the stem got the keycap powder on it. If it's a loose keycap, the combination is good, so you need to get used to the keycap, and it will change to something valuable. It's difficult for MX mania.

    THANK YOU. I've watched so many mechanical keyboard modding videos lately and it's become a hobby now and want to improve my current keyboard (Corsair k70 cherry red) and the stabs rattle like crazyyyyyy. But NO video I watched explain why people use Super Lube or Permatex dielectric grease or the Krytox and what the difference is. I just had to watch those videos again and see what the common was for stabs. Thank you for giving a TLDR in the description for dielectric grease only really used for stabs :)

  • @cardbored_
    @cardbored_ 2 года назад

    There are also tolerance differences between stabs of the same exact make and model, so it's ultimately really difficult to even do true comparisons like these. At the end of the day, we're really splitting hairs here guys. This is a hobby, we all plan to lube our stabs anyway and at the end of the day the lube application could actually make it better or even worse. I bought Zeal because I wanted to try them, that's part of the hobby. These parts are pretty cheap, so spending $15-30 to find what you like and enjoy the hobby is part of the fun. Let's not take things so seriously. At the end of the day, anyone who is not in the hobby is going to roll their eyes at the fact we're dissecting and arguing over not only tiny keyboard components but the even tinier pieces that make up those components. Let's chill.
